Published Jun 22, 2015"You guys are all troopers," drummer Lynette Gillis quipped from behind her kit to the visibly tired crowd. NXNE's 'round the clock schedule was without a doubt a demanding one, but those who fought off an early rest were rewarded by Overnight's late evening appearance. What was once duo project between siblings Lynette and Carla Gillis became a full-fledged band late last year with the addition of two more musicians for live appearances.
Describing their output as "heavy rock with pretty harmonies," it was a welcome break from the in-your-face fare earlier on the bill. Taking a bit of time to settle in after a few missed notes soloing, Carla found her footing in driving the performance forth with powerful lead vocals and chunky guitar riffs that wouldn't seem out of place on early Sabbath records. Bolstered by a rhythm section of Lynette's loose grooves and the steady bass of Mike Small, the group's strength lay in the three-part harmonies between the Gillis sisters and keyboard player Caitlin Dacey, stunning the audience particularly in the late stages of their track "Unsinkable."
