Published Sep 05, 2016Honestly, the Barr Brothers started their Agora headlining set a little bit sterile — very sharp, very "pleasant" sounding, but essentially not completely interesting. The perception quickly turned out to be some warm-up feelings. The Barr Brothers, while, yes, completely almost to a fault "sharp" in the sense that there isn't much of a loose feel to their live set, are so deliriously aware of dynamic that they're able to stretch their shining Canadiana to, quite simply, insane heights.
The band are packed with such killer players that their centrepiece — tempestuous as a thunderstorm, filled with as much wizardry as muscle — switched hands between pounding blues rock bliss and complete silence more than once. Their finale was a vicious riot, far from the easy listening that started things off, and incredibly satisfying.
Every show would be so much fun if they gave almost completely in to the demonic side of their most delicious riffs. Until then, we'll have to settle for beauty plain and simple.
