TOBi's "24 (Toronto Remix)" Is Already Hip-Hop History
Watch a video for the rework with Haviah Mighty, Shad, Jazz Cartier and Ejji Smith
Published May 06, 2020Last week, TOBi rolled out Still+ — a deluxe version of his 2019 debut album that features a remix of "24" featuring some of Toronto's finest. Now, he's rolled out a video for the track featuring collaborators Haviah Mighty, Shad, Jazz Cartier and Ejji Smith.
Directed by Kit Weyman, the video takes viewers on a tour of Toronto led by TOBi and his collaborators. The clip's concept was awarded the 2020 Music Video Production (MVP) Project grant earlier this year, a joint initiative between RBCxMusic and the Prism Prize.
In a statement, TOBi said of the concept, "I welcomed the mind of artists who are pushing back against societal norms and making a statement that we are more than our expectations. I took the opportunity to aim at changing the narratives that have existed before we were born, especially as it relates to Toronto."
The remix has already been likened to another formative Canadian summit of beats and rhyme. As Prism Prize founder Louis Calabro added, "It reminds me of the first time I saw 'Northern Touch' by Rascalz [featuring Kardinal Offishall, Thrust, Choclair & Checkmate]. Congrats to the entire team; we couldn't be more excited to be part of it."
Still+ is out now, and also features the previously shared remix of "City Blues" featuring the Game.
Exclaim! named Still one of the 10 Most Underrated Albums of 2019. Last year, TOBi also spoke to us about mental health as a Canadian musician.
